2019 STAT LINE: 61 tackles, 13 tackles for a loss, 5.5 sacks, 1 forced fumble
Roy brings a familiar face to the Panthers, as he played for head coach Matt Rhule at Baylor University. He was a three-year starter for the Bears and he got better each season. Roy is surprisingly quick for a guy his size, as he was rumored to have ran a 4.8 40 yard dash at Baylor. His length isn’t up to NFL standards, but he has enough power to make up for it. He gets off blocks quick and will power through linemen when given opportunities.
Roy delivers powerful blows when tackling, although his short arms can make it difficult to reach away from his body to make tackles. He has really good footwork for his size and has good first step explosion. Roy has a wide frame that can eat space and fill gaps, but also has sufficient gap-shooting abilities to get to the quarterback. He will be a good rotational piece on the defensive line and if there’s anyone who knows how to utilize Roy’s abilities, it’s Matt Rhule.
